Bread & Roses presents Work in Progress: Sneak Previews with Local Filmmakers
Three local filmmakers screen clips from their films now in production dealing with various aspects of work and workers in the Metro Washington area. This screening is the official launch of the 2014 Global Labor Film Festival Organizer’s Conference, and labor film festival organizers from around the world will be in attendance.
CAN'T TAKE IT NO MORE (Michael Blain & Kiley Kraskouskas)
Literally ripped from the headlines – the film is still being shot – this independent documentary is about workers across Walmart's global empire who are standing up for respect, fair pay and economic justice. Co-Director Kiley Kraskouskas screens clips.

CREATIVE FEDS (Erica Ginsberg and Leon Gerskovic)
Far more than the “faceless bureaucrats†pilloried by anti-government ideologues, federal workers find outlets for their creativity both on and off the job. As this film shows, they may find their creative outlet through a paintbrush, a musical instrument, or on a stage. For some, their creative outlet helps them be more creative in their government work, while for others it may simply be a hobby which provides balance to their work lives. Or it may be a second career of someone equally dedicated to serving their country and their craft.
Co-Director Erica Ginsberg screens clips.

GREEN CORPS (Brandon Kramer)
Chronicles the people impacted by the DC Green Corps, a green job training program created by the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act. With a focus on two long-term unemployed blue-collar workers who attempt to break a cycle of drugs and hustling, Green Corps explores how urban forestry and community-based green works and job training projects have affected struggling Americans and communities hardest hit by economic decline.
Producer Lance Kramer screens clips.

Bread & Roses is a monthly labor series that features a variety of events focused on workers and organized labor. Each month brings a new topic through interactive discussions, film screenings, and performances. The hope for these events is that attendees walk away with a greater understanding of organized labor, its role in shaping history and current relevance. The name "Bread & Roses" was inspired by a poem/song written by James Oppenheim that appeals for both fair wages and dignified conditions.
Bread & Roses is held on the first Tuesday of every month at Busboys and Poets 5th & K and hosted by Nafisa Isa, Program Innovations Specialist at Busboys. Have ideas for future Bread & Roses events? E-mail Nafisa at nafisa@busboysandpoets.com.
