About the Story League

Since March 2011, Story League has presented sold-out story shows around D.C. Founded by writer/performer SM Shrake (The Moth story slam winner, This American Life, Mortified) along with the author (Up for Renewal) and journalist (Washington Post, The Atlantic, Washingtonian, DC Magazine, Washington City Paper) Cathy Alter, Story League was born of the desire for a collaborative story-performing experience, in which the participants all help one another hone their craft. Story League is inclusive geographically, too: We have proudly brought in talent from Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore to join our local performers, building bridges between storytellers in those cities. The group often meets socially for mixers (open to all), and anyone is welcome to try out for our periodic pre-booked shows. Every third Wednesday of the month, Story League holds a Story Contest at Busboys and Poets 14/V, where the public can come try their hand at telling a true 7-minute story onstage for a chance to win a $100 cash prize. Visit for photos, a link to our videos, a comprehensive East Coast story-related events calendar, and more.
