Science Cafe presents “A Tale of Two Bays: Uncovering the Story in Long Term Ecological Data”
5th & K | Cullen | May 15,2012 | 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Scientists Jim Cloern and Walter Boynton each have devoted more than 30 years to studying ecological change in their respective systems - the San Francisco and Chesapeake Bays. They've examined how nutrient pollution, biological communities, and climate shifts have influenced patterns of ecological health or degradation. The scientists' long-duration observations have uncovered surprising findings that have challenged their presuppositions about how major ecological communities respond to different and changing environmental conditions. Join Cloern, from the U.S. Geological Survey in San Francisco, and Boynton, from the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, in a discussion about why the ecological histories of thesbays on either side of the country have unfolded differently and about how studying the past can inform the present and help us plan for the future.
