Looking for the Local
14th & V | Langston Room | September 10,2012 | 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Wherever there is conflict, there are local people building peace. That’s what international not-for-profit Peace Direct has discovered in war zones worldwide over the past eight years.
Come and hear about local peacebuilding from Peace Direct’s co-founder, Carolyn Hayman OBE. Carolyn will talk about how peacebuilders Dishani in Sri Lanka and Gulalai in Pakistan are tackling religious extremism:
- Dishani gave up a successful career as a lawyer to work for harmony and reconciliation in war-torn Sri Lanka. She brings together clergy of all faiths, and where Buddhist priests are the fiercest supporters of Sinhala supremacy, she interrogates their understanding of Buddhism. Rarely does anyone, male or female, stand up to a Buddhist monk. But Dishani has built relationships whereby she can challenge monks.
- Gulalai’s work in the Swat Valley of Pakistan also challenges religious extremism. She trains young peace activists to identify young people from within their social circles at risk of radicalisation, and then find ways to persuade them to see the world differently.
